Building Muscles That Don’t Come Naturally

Me at my 100th Barre class!

I’ve never been what you’d call athletic. To this day, I can barely catch a ball, and don’t even ask me to attempt a cartwheel. Sports just weren’t my thing growing up—and they still aren’t. But staying healthy is important to me, so I’ve spent years building strength and working out, even though it doesn’t come naturally. And here’s something I’ve learned: what you focus on, grows.

It’s the same with people skills. As an artist, connecting with people is such an important part of the journey—whether it’s sharing your work, telling your story, or simply engaging at shows or online. But I’m an introvert by nature. That “extrovert muscle”? It didn’t come naturally—I had to build it.

I’ve learned so much from friends who are naturals at this. One gives her full presence to every person she meets, making you feel like the most important human in the room. Another goes out of her way to connect with everyone she crosses paths with—and her circle of friends is huge and rich. Watching them, I’ve realized that these are habits we can all build, just like physical strength.

So here’s your gentle reminder: creativity, connection, confidence… they’re all muscles. Some may not come naturally, but with intention and practice, they grow.

Keep building. You’re stronger than you think.
